Hawaii Futures engages in projects that reflect our commitment to integrating innovative, divergent futures thinking into a wide range of public and private organizational strategies and decisions. We are a diverse and switched on group of engaged thinkers, willing to consider any new collaborations or projects, consistent with our mission and values, that might come our way. Contact us to explore the possibilities.
Sustainability 02050
What might Hawaii, and the world of which it is a part, look, feel and live like in 50 years' time? In order to help people engage in this discussion, Sustainability 02050 (August 26, 02006) will allow them to experience these alternate possibilities as tangible realities in an evolving gallery of “found futures artifacts”.
Hawaii Futures is calling upon the brightest and most ingenious people to help provoke discussion by creating images and "found objects" from parallel future worlds. More information can be found on our call to arms and on posts to the frontpage.
published works
Hawaii Futures maintains an archive of publications by Jim Dator and other prominent futurists, as well as papers and dissertations by Futures Studies undergraduate and graduate students.
Published works by Dator are also available for purchase online.
time capsule at Kapiolani Park
On June 11, 02077, tomorrow's futurists will unearth a message of 100 years previous.
Included in the time capsule are mementoes of the day of its burial, including newspapers, recordings of radio and TV shows (and their playback mechanisms), and a message to the future from futurist Jim Dator, University of Hawaii professor.
Manoa Journal of Fried and Half-Fried Ideas
The Manoa Journal of Fried and Half-Fried Ideas is a device for testing out ideas about the future in the early stages, before they are aired or published for conventional audiences or journals. In other words, Half-Fried offers a creative and nurturing environment for nascent ideas. As such, we encourage submissions from all areas, people, and persuasions. No idea is too raw for us.
Hawaii Futures maintains an archive of Half-Fried past issues for 01993-02004. Current and future publications of Half-Fried will be largely replaced by posts to the frontpage of this site.
futures salons
Since December 02005, Hawaii Futures has, in association with the Department of Political Science and the Acceleration Studies Foundation, led monthly discussions around future-oriented themes featuring local, national, and international speakers. Our topics have ranged from "The Emerging Dream Society in Korea" to "Futures Studies in Australia" to "The Future of Hotels." Included in our notable list of speakers are Jay Ogilvy, futurist and co-founder of the Global Business Network; Alexander Rose, Executive Director of The Long Now Foundation; and Howard Wolff, Executive Vice-President of Wimberly, Alison, Tong, and Goo, Architects. Recordings have been made of each of the Salons, and we are working to make these available on our site.
We will continue our Salons with an exciting line-up of scholars, scientists, activists, designers, and others who are thinking about and creating our collective futures. Stay tuned to the frontpage for updates and announcements about the Salons.
